Information in the field of Communications

Information in Communications is seen as what can be interpreted by the general public and used for general research and understanding. What is considered information in Communications are the definitions of areas of study within the field, definitions of phenomenon and research as well as the assumptions, rules and generalizations that have been derived from them that can be associated with “common knowledge” (Sableman, 314). Information such as why communications is important to study, the benefits of good communication and communication skills are open to the general public through internet sources. Good communication plays roles in important aspects of work life such as leadership, teamwork and individual happiness/success. However, to bring the word knowledge into the “information” category of Communications is not to say that they equate one another. Knowledge in Communications looks quite different from this perspective than does information. However, I do believe that information in the field of Communications can be directly linked to those who possess knowledge of the study.

Finding Information

The answer to this questions depends on the uses of this definition of information. Information that can be used to cite sources, prove research and support theories can be found in texts written by credible experts in the field. In this sense, information and knowledge can be interchangeable and dependent on one another. For instance, what is considered knowledge in one scholarly work can be used as information to support a different claim on knowledge in another scholarly work. In this definition of information, information can be used in other communication studies to prove and support claims on what can be considered knowledge in the communications field. Scholars and students in this discipline can produce information on communications by conducting research, gathering data and then analyzing what is found through these processes.  This information can be found in texts and works that look to prove knowledge in the field.
